SCANUPPIA MALAG PALAZZO - BANNED TO BICYCLES
Death climb….adieu !!! Based on a new law of the Town of Besenello, from 01 january 2009 Malga Palazzo climb will be BANNED to the bikes.
Pilgrimage from all over Europe, the 7.5 kilometers of breath taking Malga Palazzo, with an average slope of 18 %, and some walls at 45 %, are a true challenge to the limit of human efforts.
Above all during the summer, the climb is full of Italians and foreign bikers.
Reach the top is very hard without put foot on the ground.
Most of the cyclists simply climb the path with several stops to take breath and rest the legs.
For security reasons, the Town of Besenello from last spring had limited the road only to the local people with only tractors and 4x4 cars.
With a last NEW law of last October 2008, the Malga Palazzo road will be only walking by the non-local !!!!
The Major of Besenello says: “the climb is always more and more with too much traffic, so the local people told me that the situation is becoming dangerous, for the cross between locals cars and the bikers .
The locals have a permission for this road, so I, like a major, have to protect them. “
Then there is a question of responsibility , said the Major : “ if a cyclist would have a hurt, the Town is responsible !!!”
There are perhaps people not agree with the Major: Malga Palazzo climb has a great success on the web into the cycling world ; so, Malga Palazzo should be the only one tourist attraction of Besenello.
A local bed and breakfast owner say : “ When I heard about the closing of the road for the bikes, I was unpleasantly surprised ; last summer I was interviewed from the local newspaper “Adige” for to witness the interest , Italian and foreign, about the climb.
The owner of the B & B said again “.. the closing of the road is a proof of the glaring lack of tourist of Besenello. They talk about to develop the tourism , and when a very important climb for a 2.000 citizens town has a big feedback on the web , someone decide to close it !!! “
“..to avoid accidents it would be enough to signal on a panel the main things-features of the climb . I believed that Besenello in this way should be known in all the Europe and more…..to ban the road to the bikes and let the cars going up, is very anachronistic!!!”
The Major instead has decided, in agreement with the Province, to not develop any type of tourism.
Major says : “ I don’t want to create tourism on this mountain, but I want to protect the local people that want to reach their houses…”
Remains a question: who will communicate to cyclists from across Europe, the closure of the road ?????
