On the top of Hungary
Rythm of life linked to a cycletourist under travel : wake-up at 5.45 AM. Let's go ! Gyorgy Domonkosis there with us today. I received him at home with his wife, when he came in Belgium and the Netherlands, to meet his son who is working in this country. He brings me hungarian beers, I brought belgian beers to Gabór's parents. Beer-sharing ! We leave Salgótarján, four cyclists in the car, with the two Gab´r, György and I, and we reach 60 kilometers further, in the car-park in Parádsasvár, our alread friend Ferenc, road-companion of yesterday. He slept in the campsite just next to the car-park.
We climb all 5 together to the highest hungarian point : the Kekestetö. Fine road to a pass called Matra nyereg, or Matra pass, the Matra being this mountaineous wellknown massive massif in the northern part of Hungary. It's there that we turn to the left for the Kekestetö and on the right for the Galyatetö. The Galya, it will be for a little later ! We follow our way to Kekestetö and 3km before the top, where artists have a shop for touristical attractions and buy some souvenirs, the groupe stops and we fill the bottles with the help of a waterexit for firemen. Be careful with the strongness of the water :-) .
Sprint on "cel"
The last 3 kiloeters to the the top of the Kekestetó, it's something different ! 10% as an average gradient , fine and hard! The top of a country, it mus be worthy . After having scotched a sticker on a panel, we arrive and get a photo in front of the wellknown stone with the hungarian colors. We go to the TV tower and to the open hole through the trees giving some narrow vision to a restricted landscape.
5 styles on a stele
Restricted view but beautiful view , on the foot of a 200m high TV tower. We are over the altitude 1000. Ferenc explains me that in Japan, they have uilt a TV tower, 1000m high. I'm looking to the 200m high tower and I'm thinking that they are crazy, those Japanese.
Discussion on the top in front of the narrow view.
We go down back until the Matra pass where we take now the direction to the other regional BIG : the Galyatetö. Etienne told me that the Galyatetö isn't worthy coming from the Kekestetö because there was too less kiloemetrs to climb again. But, the field gives me 9 kilometers to climb, of course, not so hard and steep, but nevertheless a climb. It's not like for the Fillefjell in Norway. The examples aren't similar, I think. The top of the Galyatetö is busy with an hostel four stars and is less worthy than the previous one. It's a good hungarian top, nothing more !
Police !
Gabci scotches the stickers on a trafic sign : this makes us laugh and we make the show in front of this four stars hostel.
Ferenc, Gyorgy, Daniel, Gabó K. et Gabór V. : fetch the mistake !
On the picture I show a small papersheet : it is one of the numerous presents that Gabór prepared for me. This one is a diploma with the four stamps f Matra and Bükk. Those tops are included in a long path going through the whole Hungary, from wes to east and linking all the hungarian high tops. Inside, these 4 BIGs. I keep then on paper the 4 marks of great hungarian souvenirs. I'll also have a DVD with all the stages in mountains from the last Tour de France, an hungarian review with Gyötrgy and I in the climb of tthe BIG called Gayolle in Belgium, and many other things... Thank you so much, Gabór, thank you for all this welcome that I'm not ready to forget !
We go down to the cars through a downhill with many holes on the road in the beginning (The Galya road is not good, many holes !!!!) but quicker at the end. I always go down using my front brakes. Not too much risks therefore. We leave the region to the east, leave the Matra and go to the Bükk massive, with more gentle slopes. According to the local cyclists, it's the paradise for cycling. We arrive at midday on the car-park of a supermarket at Eger. We eat a small pizza and we meet two nex hungarian guys who will give us their good company for the afternoon : : Csaba Hollo-Vasko, teacher of french language in a regional catholic school (just like I'm a mathematic teacher in the same kind of school), and János Czéli, regional cyclist with an uncredible bike, one of these holy monsters of the bike like "I ride everywhere with my strange and loud bike ".Janós only speaks hungarian but we smile two or three times together and it's enough to understand ourselves. With Csaba, it was a great happiness for me to share my own language and the cultural experiences of our similar job.
Casaba and Janós come with us !
We'll be a group of seven cyclists to climb this unfinishable , "straightliny", "unspellable", "undescriptable", strange and so long Felsö-Borovnyak ! We'll take only 700m in 30km of climbing, but never going down, with a regular 2-4% calm and well surfaced road, where it is really the cyclists'paradise because there is no trafic at all. Nearly 3 hours through a cycling-way first, and a national road secondly. We'll use a water-gift in the middle, we'll turn to a narrower road to the left in a new pass, we'll ondulate on the plateau, we'll avoid the old BIG called Banküt, to pass the barreer until the start of the chair-lifts of this winter resort, and finally we'll reach the military cloure of the Felsö-Borovnyak. 700m of difference of level, that after our morning, seem to be incredibily long. BUt the atmosphere in the group was funny and very harmonious. A beautiful work of human wildness between guys who know what effort means and how much we need the other ones in those kinds of adventures. I had two times a flat tyre in the downhill and I think that without Csaba, I would always be there now because he, and alone him, can how to manage with a bad pump to have enough air in the tyre. Cycling lesson, mister the teaher ! Thanks a lot ! We speak together with him about our schools, and perhaps a meeting between them in the future, we also speak about his experience in the Dolomites marathon whose he's wearing the jersey. We share all our experiences with the other ones ! Fine group indeed ! Very fine souvenir in my mind, I hope the self for them !
Calm and happiness !
We stop for getting photos of running horses in freedom , stopped chair-lifts in summer; we klaugh with the militair on the top who forbides one of us to make a pee next to the electric closure, we drink a dutch beer in the pub of the Bankut, the older BIG, a little lower.
At the end of the road...
We go down very rapidly through those 3 kilometersd w<ith gentle slopes so happy for the downhill. With a fall of two of us, just after a curve, when one of us stops hardly to get a picture of the other ones...falling! Gagand funny because no damage ! Well, hungarian in fact !
Dutch beers on the table of the Banküt outdoor pub ! !
Back with 100 kilometers until Salgótarján. A new lunch fantastically managed by Gabor's mum who left us to prepare the national day's feast, with the new bread ceremony. A short evening spent to send SMS to Belgium to prepare my backway of tomorrow. Tomorrow prevents me with the end of a magnificent trip, with so much new experiences, varieties but at the end of which I'm in fact extremely tired. 1500 km way back to Belgium tomorrow and 2 slovakian BIGs before coming home with all the jobs not yet done, garden, school's preparations,... Let's sleep because tomorrow at 5.45 in the morning ,the "soon waked up, happily waked up " Gabór Kreicsi will come to call me !
